I finally saw The Hunger Games last night. Was it good? Yes. Did I love it? No. But that's what happens when a great book is adapted into a movie. There's only so much character development and sub-plot that can fit into a 2 1/2 hour time frame. If you enjoyed the movie, then go read the book. I'd go ahead and get the other two books as well because once you finish one you'll want to start the next one right away. Also, don't plan on doing anything else for like a week.

And may the odds be ever in your favor.

out of print

Last year on our 2nd anniversary (year two is cotton) my sister sent both Ebert and I a t-shirt from Out of Pring Clothing- we loved it! And now they have classic children's book t-shirts for grown-ups (and kids too!). This is perfect for those of us who don't really want to grow up, who want to always believe in magic and see everything as amazing. I know this is something that can be done as an adult, that we don't ever have to grow out of seeing life as an amazing and magical wonder, but it was just easier as a kid.

recommended reading

In preparation for tomorrow's Sunday Supper post, I recommend reading this book.

Not only because it's about one of my favorite vegetables, but also because the author, Amy KR, is one of my absolute favorites.

currently reading

I'm happy to say that I'm officially a Chicago Public Library card holder. I ventured out into the cold today to get my library card at the Harold Washington Library Center. Now, that's a library! 9 levels with rows and rows of beautiful bindings on every shelf. It's a book lovers dream. The main reason I went to the library was because I'm on a search for a new monologue which means I need to read plays, lots and lots of plays. As an actor this is something I should be doing on a regular basis anyway- reacquainting myself with established playwrights and reading new plays from up and coming playwrights. And while I was on my monologue quest I remembered that I've been wanting to read this book.

Yes, it's going to be some fun holiday reading for me!

one hundred years of solitude

There were times when it felt like it would take me one hundred years to finish reading this book. There were moments when all I wanted was to be at the final paragraph, reading the last sentences, so that I could finally cross this book off my list. But, as I laid in bed last night surrounded by the conclusion of life and death, I wanted nothing more than for the Buendia's journey to continue, for them to live on.

I suppose that's why this book is so brilliant, because that's exactly how it is with life - we don't realize the meaning of it, until it's over. We think we have all the time in the world, although we're not always enjoying the journey.

"What hurts me most," she would say, laughing, "is all the time that we wasted."

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, you are a master storyteller.
