happy long weekend!

Here's to the last few days of summer and to a glorious long weekend. I'll be enjoying the flavors of summer with some baking and cooking along with a busy weekend of rehearsals, creating my happy, and spending time with family and friends! Why can't three-day weekends be every weekend?

What exciting plans do you have this weekend? Will you be watching the blue moon tonight?

how to work better

Besides just working more, right? But I like this, it's simple (hence #8). I like the idea of working better. And by work I mean my real work- the work that makes my heart sing, the work that brings me here as I create my happy. You know...that work.

make it happen

I just realized that I've pinned this twice. I guess I'm trying to tell myself something. I hope I listen this time.

happy monday!

chips & salsas

tacos

avocado ice cream

Dining at de cero with my husband makes me happy! Especially on a Friday night after a long work week. It was a great way to start the weekend. And a big thank you to my cousin's for the gift certificate- it was a great birthday present and I'm glad we finally used it!

inspired

I'm captivated by these photos. Just snapshots of his life, but etched with so much detail. One day I hope to take photos as raw as these images.

happy monday!

A great cup of coffee on a Monday morning makes me happy! Especially after two days of no caffeine.

During my solo weekend I decided to do a 48-hour cleanse/detox. It was a good challenge. The only thing I really missed, besides my husband, was my morning cup(s) of coffee. It's not the caffeine that I missed, it was the ritual. There's just something very soothing about a dark cup of coffee in my favorite mug on a Saturday morning- leisurely sipping away the quiet hours through flavors of earthy, boldness. Oh, coffee...I don't think I could ever give you up!

a lesson in baking

Last Sunday my friend Ivory and I had a baking lesson with her mother-in-law Patsy. The kind of baking Patsy does is the best kind of baking- from scratch! I've baked a few things from scratch but usually something doesn't come out quite right- whether it's the taste, texture, or appearance. Although Ebert will argue that whenever I bake it always tastes good. As I've mentioned here before I don't always have the patience for baking yet for some reason I still attempt new recipes. Baking is an art and a science that does not come naturally to me. This year, however, I'm determined to master some form of it. I've tried baking cakes now I'm switching to pies. I like pies better than cakes anyway. I've made pies before, I just cheat and buy a pre-made pie crust. I've never ventured into baking pies from scratch because I've always been daunted by making the crust. The crust is what makes the pie, it's the best part of a pie and if it's not good then you don't have a good pie (at least in my opinion). I'm happy to say that Patsy helped me get over my pie dough fear by teaching us how to make an apple crostata- a free-form, rustic type of pie. It was a fun day with two lovely ladies and now I feel confident about baking a pie from scratch. I just need to practice to get better at it. Ebert, I hope you're hungry!

solo

I have the apartment to myself this weekend. It sure is quiet. Ebert went up to Wisconsin to go camping with his family and I decided to stay behind. I'm going to miss him- I've already told him like a hundred times that I miss him already. But I really wanted (needed) to take some time just for me. It's going to be good!

Happy Weekend!

wish

Happy Monday! Here's a wish for you. If you feel like taking it go ahead- close your eyes and make that wish. Wish for it with all your heart. Whatever it is I hope it comes trues.

It was a busy and fun-filled weekend for us and I have lots to catch up on. The one thing I really want to catch up on is blogging, but unfortunately I left my purse, along with my camera, in the suburbs and can't post any pictures until I figure out how I'm going to get it back. I'm quite annoyed with myself about this. I'm sure you can guess what I'm going to wish for...and it won't be a pony!

{via create.your.happy}

Update...My wish came true- I got my purse back this afternoon. And the crazy thing is that it was really easy and I didn't even have to do much about it, all thanks to the kindness of others. I just put my wish out there and the Universe took care of the rest. That whole just putting it out there idea and letting it go is really blowing my mind by the way. I am so very grateful. Now it's your turn, make your wish!

yoga

Vira II

Last night I went to my first yoga class in almost a year. It was hard. My body felt older- my muscles were stiff, I'm not as flexible or strong as I once was, and today I'm sore. But I have to start somewhere and I've heard that the beginning is a very good place to start. So that's where I am...at the beginning- learning how to flow from one pose to next, how to be present and quiet the mind, but most importantly how to breathe again. I want to breathe in all the love, truth, and creativity the Universe has to share with me and breathe out all the junk that I'm letting get in my way. My legs might shake a bit as I stand in the poses, but I will stand strong because there's a warrior in me. There's warrior in all of us.

watermelon cocktail

IMG 1756

Watermelon is one of my favorite summer fruits. I bought one the other day and have already eaten half of it...by myself. I guess Ebert doesn't like watermelon as much as I do. I've been wanting to eat the other half but then I started to think that maybe I should get my husband to eat some too. I mean, why shouldn't he enjoy "the fruits of our labor" just as much as I have? I certainly could eat the other half all by myself (and would enjoy doing so), but it's probably best that I don't, so this is what I came up with...

I combined this recipe with this recipe for a deliciously, refreshing watermelon-jalapeno cocktail. And friends, let me tell you, it's good. It's really good. This might just be a new summer favorite!

You could also make this without alcohol and it would still be delicious. And in case this drink doesn't sound like the most amazing cocktail ever here are some other ideas for watermelon. Notice that most of these recipes use cubed watermelon because, really, that's the only way to eat it.
